CO2-neutral aviation – a dream that is becoming increasingly realistic in view of recent developments. Last year, WingMag not only reported on the first CO2-neutral cargo flight. At the same time, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) became more and more important. The “Fuelling Flight Initiative”, which Ryanair joined today, is supporting this cause.

Having Europe’s largest airline, Ryanair, join this initiative is an important step for the future of aviation. The “Fuelling Flight Initiative” brings together airlines, scientists and environmentalists. They are discussing how the EU can support the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel in the future, for example through EU-wide guidelines. In fact, directives already exist, which include Sustainable Aviation Fuel. However, they do not meet the sustainability standards chosen by the public and the industry.

The European Climate Foundation is delighted that Ryanair has joined this initiative. Europe must ensure that future policies only promote the most sustainable fuels for reducing the climate impact of aviation, and the EU needs to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past.

Ryanair’s participation in the “Fuelling Flight Initiative” shows that climate-friendly thinking is already taking place among the industry giants. Now it remains to be hoped that the results of the consultations in the initiative will lead to improved guidelines as quickly as possible.
