Naming aircraft is a much discussed topic in some places. While some airlines often put little creativity into their names, others have a very well thought-out concept. The Spanish airline Iberia, for example, has now decided to name its A320neos after important people and places in Spanish aviation. The aircraft with the designation EC-NJU is now called María Bernaldo de Quirós.

For connoisseurs of aviation history this name is not an unknown one. María Bernaldo de Quirós was the name of the first female Spanish pilot. Born in 1898, she received her pilot’s license thirty years later. Her style of flying made her particularly well-known – even beyond the borders of Spain. Her daring flight maneuvers were the reason why she was given the nickname “Miss Golondrina”. María Bernaldo de Quirós became an important role model for girls and women, as she showed superiorly that women can be at least as good pilots as men. With the naming of the A320neo in her name, Iberia now carries her legacy proudly through the skies.

Even though currently with 85 female pilots only six percent of the Iberia Cockpit workforce are female, this figure is still above the international average. Therefore, the aircraft’s name is a magnificent symbol that continues to inspire women.
