MOM Air – marketing gag or a lot of fuss about nothing?

A new low-cost airline from Iceland called MOM Air? We at WingMag were quite surprised when we stumbled across the website of the so-called airline start-up. After all, we know WOW Air as an Icelandic low-cost airline that was about to make a comeback at the beginning of the year.

It really is a curiosity. MOM Air simply mirrors WOW Air’s logo and also uses a corporate identity that looks very similar to the existing airline. If you take a closer look at the website, you quickly get the impression that MOM Air is probably more of a joke. Although it advertises low fares and a fleet of six Airbus A320neo, there is also very questionable content. For example, the airline wants to offer “COVID flights” in which infected and non-infected people are on the same aircraft. Furthermore, the first two tickets on each flight are supposed to be free of charge. Additionally, things like toilet paper and hand soap are to be paid for on board.

Perhaps we will know more on 11 November, as an official press conference has been announced for that day. However, our guess is that it is a marketing gag initiated by WOW Air. After all, there have been no official updates on the comeback for months. In addition, it would have been expected that WOW Air would distance itself from MOM Air due to the danger of confusion and the curious statements. But this did not happen. So we estimate that on November 11th there will be no news about the StartUp but about WOW Air.
