The Hungarian airline Wizz Air continues to expand even during the Covid-19 pandemic. Most recently, we reported in WingMag on the Wizz Air Abu Dhabi joint venture. But the airline’s expansion plans are not only directed towards the East. It is also opening new bases in the United Kingdom. London Luton and the recently announced Doncaster Sheffield Airport will now be followed by Gatwick.

Wizz Air plans to offer four new destinations from its third location in the United Kingdom: Athens, Naples, Lanzarote and Malta. An Airbus A321 will be stationed in Gatwick, south of London. A further A321 will also be available at Doncaster Sheffield Airport from October and will fly seven new routes. With the destinations Alicante, Larnaca, Malaga, Faro, Kosice, Suceava and Lublin, Wizz Air wants to further consolidate the route network between Eastern Europe and the United Kingdom. But the Hungarians are not only focusing on the former EU state. Other new bases include Dortmund and Milan-Malpensa.

This underlines Wizz Air’s growing importance for the entire European region. The airline could become a serious competitor of Ryanair, because ticket prices are in the same segment. We have already had a small foretaste of the competition that may come, we reported.
